Clement played hero in this one with a late single to win it on a first pitch splitter from Kirby Yates. He has an unorthodox approach with a 7.8 K%, 2.3 BB%, and 58.8% swing rate (48.8% is the major league average, but has maintained a .258 batting average this season with his put-everything-in-play style. He's a fun dart throw if you need a boost in that category.
Ernie Clement hit a walk-off single to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider doesn't seem to think very much of Barger, at least judging by the fact that he keeps using Ernie Clement over him against righties. Clement is hitting .252/.264/.400 against righties this season. Barger really should be able to better that, but he is a downgrade defensively at third.
Tigers' closer Jason Foley was called upon to put out a fire in the eighth inning, so it was Holton who was entrusted the ninth to face the bottom of the Jays' lineup. The 28-year-old southpaw made it look easy in this one, getting Daulton Varsho on a ground ball to second, Alejandro Kirk on a fly ball to left and Ernie Clement on a comebacker to end it. On the season, Holton has compiled a 3.29 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a 39/11 K/BB ratio over 52 innings to go with four wins and three saves.
The right-hander walked one and struck out just one batter in the ballgame. The Blue Jays had scratched out just an unearned run against him through the first three frames, but the wheels fell off for Gallen in the fourth inning. There, the Jays' scored on run-scoring singles by Daulton Varsho and Ernie Clement before they opened it up with a grand slam off the bat of Kevin Kiermaier. Gallen got just four swings and misses on 70 pitches in the game, registering a CSW of 26 percent. He finishes his first half with a 6-5 record, 3.87 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 76/21 K/BB ratio over 76 2/3 innings in his 15 starts.
