It's the first time that any member of the Mariners has won the award -- which recognizes the league's top overall defender. Raleigh is just the second American League catcher to receive the honor, joining Jose Trevino who won the award in 2022. Yadier Molina is the only catcher to win it in the National League, but he did so four different times. The 27-year-old backstop led American League catchers in framing runs (13) and tied for the lead in defensive runs saved (16) while pacing all of baseball in runners caught stealing (26).
Wells became the youngest Yankees catcher to hit a home run in the World Series at 25 years old. His solo home run off Landon Knack in the sixth inning provided the Yankees with some breathing room as they took a 6-4 lead. Wells was 4-for-41 in the postseason entering play Tuesday, but showed that he still has more to offer right now than Jose Trevino. Given that the Dodgers don't have any left-handed starting pitchers, expect Wells to be behind the plate for the Yankees for the rest of the series.
The Yankees will run out the exact same lineup except for Trevino starting for Austin Wells, who has gone just 4-for-41 this postseason with a 41 percent strikeout rate. Trevino has had issues controlling the running game this season, so that will be something to keep an eye on tonight.
The Yankees hope Jose Trevino can provide some more offense for a struggling lineup.
Trevino will start at catcher Monday in Game 3 of the World Series against the Dodgers, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
