Cronenworth drove in a pair with his blast in the eighth to extend San Diego's lead to 7-0. The 30-year-old also drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning. Cronenworth has homered 14 times in 2024 with 58 RBI while hitting a respectable .260/.328/.438.
He'll take a seat against left-hander Chris Sale. Jake Cronenworth will play first base and Donovan Solano will serve as the DH as the Padres go with a righty-heavy lineup.
We wonder how Cronenworth feels about the Padres essentially taking him out of the mix for an All-Star nod by listing him at first base and Luis Arraez at second base on the ballot. Arraez went on to make the team at the much weaker position, and Cronenworth is staying home despite being the better hitter of the two this year and easily the more valuable defender. That's not to say Cronenworth necessarily would have made the team at second -- Brice Turang probably had the better argument behind starter Ketel Marte -- but he certainly wasn't going to as a first baseman.
Gilbert looked far too good tonight to actually have his ERA increase, but that's what happened after he gave up a solo homer to Jake Cronenworth in the seventh and a two-run shot to Kyle Higashioka with two outs in the eighth. On the plus side, it's the first time this year that he's allowed more than one run and notched a win. Apart from the homers, he gave up just two other hits in the contest, walked one and struck out seven in moving to 6-5 with a 2.94 ERA.
Sewald is going through it as of late. After blowing a save Tuesday against the Dodgers, the right-hander was even worse Friday night while picking up his second blown save and second loss. He allowed a game-tying homer to Jurickson Profar, walked Jake Cronenworth, and gave up a two-run blast to Manny Machado. Sewald has gone through spurts like this before, but fantasy managers -- outside of those have the luxury to put him on the bench until they see better results -- should stick with Sewald. The Diamondbacks are going to do the same.
