The ScoreFantasy: 10 must-have hitters

It's always important to enter drafts with a handful of targets that you think are crucial to your team's success. Here, we take a look at 10 must-have hitters who could be difference-makers en route to a fantasy championship in 2024.Average draft positions are from FantasyPros as of March 14.Trea Turner, Phillies - SS (ADP: 13) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyTurner struggled to find his footing during his first season with the Phillies. The All-Star shortstop posted his lowest OPS (.778) in a season since 2018. However, Turner found his stride down the stretch, registering an OPS of 1.061 in August and .932 in September and October. Turner remains entrenched in the No. 2 spot in the Phillies' lineup and is primed to bounce back to provide his usual strong contributions across multiple offensive categories in 2024.Nolan Jones, Rockies - 1B/OF (ADP: 52) Dustin Bradford / Getty Images Sport / GettyJones was one of the few bright spots in Colorado during a miserable 2023 season. The Rockies came away like bandits in the trade that brought Jones over from the Cleveland Guardians. The 25-year-old had a hard-hit rate of over 40% in 2023 and is a valuable commodity in fantasy baseball with his ability to hit for power and steal bases. Although his batting average could decline somewhat in 2024, Jones may make up for it in the power department after hitting 20 home runs in just 106 games last season.Fernando Tatis Jr., Padres - OF (ADP: 9) Rob Tringali / Major League Baseball / GettyTatis registered a 113 wRC+ last season after being above 150 in each of his first three MLB seasons. The 25-year-old still hit 25 home runs and stole 29 bases in what many would call a down year offensively. Tatis is often being taken outside of the top-10 picks in drafts. That screams great value, as Tatis is more than capable of putting up a 40-homer, 40-steal season if he can remain healthy in 2024.Jackson Chourio, Brewers - OF (ADP: 137) Diamond Images / Diamond Images / GettyThe Brewers handed Chourio the largest contract for a player yet to debut in MLB history. There are likely to be growing pains for the talented rookie in 2024. However, Chourio will almost assuredly be given every opportunity to play regularly and could hit 10-to-15 home runs with at least 30 steals. That's a very strong skill set to target in a third or fourth outfielder in drafts.Jordan Walker, Cardinals - OF (ADP: 114) Steph Chambers / Getty Images Sport / GettyWalker had issues getting the ball in the air during his rookie season, as he had a ground-ball rate above 46%. He did show tremendous power potential, though, belting 16 home runs with nearly 44% of those long balls registering as no-doubt homers, according to Statcast. Walker has the ability to hit the ball as hard and as far as almost any hitter in baseball. This year is about finding more consistency and less of the up-and-down he showed in his rookie campaign.Triston Casas, Red Sox - 1B (ADP: 91) Julio Aguilar / Getty Images Sport / GettyCasas is coming off an impressive rookie season. The first baseman has strong power from the left side and showcased strong on-base skills with a nearly 14% walk rate and a .367 on-base percentage. Casas is worth being more aggressive for in drafts if your league uses OBP or OPS instead of batting average as a category. He's expected to be a cleanup hitter for the Red Sox in 2024, which should lead to a healthy amount of RBI opportunities.Riley Greene, Tigers - OF (ADP: 149) Katelyn Mulcahy / Getty Images Sport / GettyHealth is the only thing standing in Greene's way of emerging as a high-end fantasy contributor in 2024. Injuries limited Greene to just 99 games last season. However, he was very productive when on the field, posting a 119 wRC+ and improving his hard-hit rate from 32.4% in his rookie season to 39.1% in 2023. Greene looks ready to break out in a big way heading into the season.Francisco Alvarez, Mets - C (ADP: 169) Mike Stobe / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Mets backstop showed his tremendous power potential, blasting 25 home runs over 123 games in his rookie season. Alvarez struck out 26% of the time and hit just .209 but still finished the campaign as the No. 20 fantasy catcher. If he can improve his plate discipline, Alvarez could rocket into the top 10 at the position in 2024.Edouard Julien, Twins - 2B (ADP: 210) David Berding / Getty ImagesMuch like Casas, Julien has more value in leagues that use OBP or OPS. The 24-year-old walked almost 16% of the time during his rookie season and finished the year with 16 home runs and a 136 wRC+ over 109 games. Julien is a candidate to start the season leading off for the Twins. He could flirt with 100 runs scored from that position plus 20 home runs. He's looking like a huge bargain in drafts.Oneil Cruz, Pirates - SS (ADP: 66) Paul Rutherford / Getty Images Sport / GettyCruz could come at a modest discount in drafts after an ankle injury limited him to just nine games in 2023. The 25-year-old has prodigious power and shouldn't be hampered on the base paths with his ankle fully recovered. Cruz is going anywhere from the sixth round to the ninth round in drafts. He should be able to easily outperform that range if he can stay on the field.Copyright © 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
