The ScoreBrewers' Counsell: Ump's obstruction call was 'terrible'

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell wasn't happy with umpire Marty Foster after a questionable obstruction call during the second inning of Wednesday's loss to the Miami Marlins."It was a terrible call," Counsell said postgame, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. "I have no idea what Marty was trying to make up there (or) what he saw. "It's even worse looking at the replay than I thought he might have seen. Bad call" E1 Most bizarre error of the year pic.twitter.com/oFB81HNMkl MLB Errors (@mlberrors) April 28, 2021 Brewers right-hander Zack Godley was charged with obstruction for impeding Marlins infielder Isan Diaz's ability to reach first base on a ground ball. Foster stood by his call when asked about it postgame."I'm 100% sure that the runner was impeded on his way to first base," Foster said, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel."(Diaz) actually makes a jog to the right to get out of his way, to get out of Godley's way," he added. "That's clear-cut obstruction. It doesn't have to be contact. It just has to hinder or obstruct, and that's what happened."Brewers second baseman Kolten Wong didn't agree with the umpire's assessment of the play."It just shouldn't have been called," Wong said, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. "It didn't make any sense and it's one of those things where that play definitely changed the game."A run still would have scored even if Godley wasn't charged with obstruction, but the second out of the inning would also have been recorded. The Marlins scored twice in the inning and went on to win 6-2.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
